The Power of Coaching and Believing in Yourself
- Dionne Rashad
Hello, my name is Dionne Rashad, and I am the CEO of KDMJ Solutions. At KDMJ, we specialize in providing project management training and coaching services to corporate and government clients. Over the years, I’ve learned just how powerful coaching can be, not only from my personal journey but also through the growth of those I’ve coached.
In my own career, coaching has been a constant, helping me grow and reach my goals. I’ve sought guidance from others, and in return, I’ve made it a priority to help those coming up behind me. For instance, I coached a woman who started her career in accounting but was looking to transition into project management. Today, she’s a successful Program Manager—a testament to the power of guidance and support.
For coaching to be effective, you must be open to feedback. Growth requires a willingness to consider new perspectives and put in the effort to improve. Recently, I worked with a group of individuals aged 50 and above who were re-entering the workforce. I shared two essential tips with them that I'd like to pass along to you as well.
Tip 1: Be Confident. If you haven't interviewed in a while, it can be intimidating to face a series of questions. I provided my group with a list of interview questions to practice. When you rehearse answers, you’re less likely to feel caught off guard, allowing you to respond with confidence. Preparation is key; confidence follows practice.
Tip 2: Know Your Worth. Many people underestimate their value, especially when it comes to salary negotiations. I encourage you to review the job description and check off the skills you possess. If you meet 75% or more of the criteria, you’re not only qualified but also worthy of the compensation offered. Don’t shy away from asking for what you deserve.
In my own career, I’ve faced challenges that required a blend of humility and perseverance. Early on, I took a job outside my comfort zone and managed a team with the lowest performance in the department. By focusing on the process and driving necessary changes, I turned that team into top performers within 90 days. This experience taught me that even if you’re unfamiliar with specific tasks, understanding the bigger picture and pushing for improvement can lead to remarkable outcomes.
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve ever received was from my mom, who taught me the importance of believing in myself. During a nerve-wracking cheerleading tryout, she encouraged me to visualize success. With her support, I believed I could do it—and I did. She also taught me to ask “how” when faced with new challenges. Learning from others who’ve walked a similar path provides invaluable insight and guidance.
Years later, I carried these lessons forward and requested a mentor at a crucial point in my career. Not only did my director agree to mentor me, but our relationship also inspired a mentorship program that ultimately benefited the entire organization. It all started with the confidence to ask for help and the belief that I could grow with the right support.
At KDMJ Solutions, we’re passionate about unlocking the potential in each person we work with. I’m grateful for the keys my mom gave me, as they’ve been instrumental in my personal and professional growth. My goal is to share those keys with others and help them find success. Believe in yourself, be willing to ask questions, and don’t let anything stand in your way. You’re worthy of achieving your dreams.
